While a recent court decision will protect wolves in 44 states, gray wolves in the Northern Rockies are facing threats from hunting and trapping that have not been seen in decades. In Montana, a single person can kill as many as 20 wolves and there is no limit in Idaho. For the first time, the use of deadly and indiscriminate neck snares are allowed in Montana, putting gray wolves there at even greater risk.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) has begun a status review to study whether wolves in the region need the protections of the Endangered Species Act that were taken from them in 2011. The USFWS has indicated this could take months to complete.
Wolves can't wait.
A 12 month status review will leave wolves in the Northern Rockies unprotected for far too long. Tell the Administration to issue emergency Endangered Species Act protections now as the law permits them to in emergency situations like this.
